BLACKSBURG, Va. – Junior Katie DeTuro’s 44th-minute goal lifted the No. 16 Virginia Tech women’s soccer team over No. 18 Maryland, 1-0, Sunday evening at Thompson Field. The Hokies handed the Terps their first ACC loss as they fell to 8-3-2 overall and 4-1-1 in the conference. This is the ninth shutout of the season for Tech as it improved to 10-2-0 on the season and 2-2-0 in the ACC.

The game started out very physical, as 21 of the 29 fouls were called in the first half. Tech set the tone early as it took the first shot of the game a little over a minute into regulation. Shannon Mayrose fired a shot at the 1:12 mark but Maryland’s Rachelle Beanlands was there to make the stop.

The Hokies took three more shots before notching the goal with 2:11 remaining in the half. The ball was sent up field to Ashley Meier, who quickly dished it to DeTuro. The junior made a quick move past a Terp defender and fired a hard shot past Beanlands that found the back of the net.

Tech controlled the tempo throughout the half and outshot Maryland 5-3, while the Terps took the 2-1 corner kick advantage.

Both teams came out strong in the second and continued to attack. Maryland took eight more shots, while Tech had seven opportunities to increase its lead. The Terps had two close chances to find a goal as Becky Kaplan’s shot in the 26th minute hit the crossbar and Haley Brock fired a close call at the 48:20 mark that hit the post.

Maryland out cornered the Hokies, 9-4, while Tech outshot the Terps 12-11. Maryland’s Olivia Wagner and Brock led both teams with three shots apiece, while four Hokies recorded two shots each.

Tech’s strong backline of Kelsey Mitchell, Jordan Coburn, Amanda Gerhard and Julia Goldsworthy helped Dayle Colpitts (5-2-0) pick up her 16th career shutout. The junior stopped all four shots on goal that Maryland fired. Out of the 12 Tech shots, the Hokies recorded seven on goal as Beanlands (8-3-1) took her third loss of the season and picked up six saves.

The Hokies return to action with another tough ACC match Thursday hosting No. 4 Duke Thursday at 7 p.m. on Thompson Field.
