No. 16 Hokies set for a top-20 matchup against No. 18 Maryland

• After a tough 2-1 heartbreaker to then-No. 4 Boston College a week ago, the Hokies look to bounce back Sunday against No. 18 Maryland at 5 p.m. on Thompson Field

SUNDAY’S MATCH

• Virginia Tech returns to Thompson Field Sunday for a 5 p.m. match up against No. 18 Maryland

• The match will be aired live on HokieSports All Access

• This will be third ranked team to face the Hokies this season

THE TERPS

• Maryland is coming off a 3-1 win over No. 7 Virginia Thursday and are currently on a five-game unbeaten streak

• The Terps are undefeated in the ACC and have knocked off three top-15 teams and tied No. 4 Duke

• Becky Kaplan leads Maryland with nine goals, three assists, 21 points and five game-winners

• Rachelle Beanlands will be in goal for the Terps she has played 11 games and has a 8-2-1 record with 32 saves

SUNDAY AT 5PM

• This marks the first time the Hokies have played a 5 p.m. match this season

• The last time Virginia Tech played a 5 p.m. match was Sunday, Sept. 18, 2011 at then-No. 6 Maryland

• The Hokies fell 2-1 at Ludwig Field after having the 1-0 lead at halftime

TERPS SERIES

• This marks the 10th meeting between the two teams and Virginia Tech leads 4-3-2

• The series dates back to 1995 when the Terps won 6-0 in College Park, Md.

• The Hokies are undefeated in Blacksburg against Maryland

• The Terps have outscored the Hokies 12-8 in the series

LAST TIME OUT

• The Hokies dropped a 2-1 heartbreaker to then-No. 4 Boston College last Sunday

Shannon Mayrose notched a goal in the 16th minute to give Virginia Tech the 1-0 lead at halftime

• The Hokies almost held the Eagles to the shutout but BC tied it at one at the 83:55 mark

• Just two minutes later the Eagles notched the game-winner in the 86th minute

SHUTTING OUT LEFT AND RIGHT

• The Hokies made history as they recorded their longest consecutive shutout streak in program history

• The 3-0 shutout over NC State on Sept. 16 was Virginia Tech’s sixth-straight shutout which broke the Hokie record (5) which dates back to 1994

• Nebraska, North Carolina and Boston College are the only teams to score on the Hokies this season and Virginia Tech has outscored its opponents 22-7

MAYROSE EARNS HARDEE’S STAR OF THE WEEK HONOR

• Redshirt junior Shannon Mayrose was named Virginia Tech’s Hardee’s Star of the Week Monday, Sept. 17

• The forward scored the first two goals to help lift the Hokies past NC State, 3-0

• She also led both teams with five shots and three on frame as Virginia Tech improved to 9-0-0 on the season

LEADING THE NATION

• The Hokies led the nation in three team stats, shutout percentage, goals-against average and save percentage,

through the games played on Sept. 16

• In first nine games, Virginia Tech had only allowed two goals and had a GAA of 0.217

• The Hokies had a shutout percentage of 0.889 with eight shutouts and a 0.931 save percentage

• Virginia Tech was tied with No. 1 Florida State in won-lost-tied percentage, as both teams are undefeated

• This week the Hokies are still in the top 10 in shutout percentage, as they sit tied for fourth with .727

SHOTS ON SHOTS ON SHOTS

• Not only does redshirt junior Shannon Mayrose lead Tech in shots, she sits on top of the conference as well with 48

• She has taken well over 20 more shots than any other Hokie

• Mayrose also sits second in the ACC in shots per game with 4.36 and is tied for second in game-winning goals with four

COLPITTS NAMED TO TOPDRAWERSOCCER.COM TEAM OF THE WEEK

• Junior Dayle Colpitts was named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com Team of the Week Monday, Sept. 10

• The goalkeeper played every minute against Illinois and UMass and notched her third-straight shutout

• She charted six saves in the pair of wins for the Hokies

WAKE FOREST ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM

• Three Hokies were selected to the 2012 Wake Forest Invitational All-Tournament team

• Shannon Mayrose was honored for her game winner against Illinois

• Freshman Ashley Meier found the back of the net against Massachusetts and fired four shots to earn the honor

• Team captain and defensive leader Kelsey Mitchell led a defense that only allowed 5.5 shots per game to get placed on the squad

MAKING HISTORY

• The 2-0 win over Massachusetts goes down in the Virginia Tech Women’s Soccer Record Book

• The win marked Tech’s eighth consecutive win which is the most in women’s soccer history

• It also set a new record for the best season start for the Hokies

MOVING ON UP

• The Hokies were ranked No. 8 in the NSCAA Continental Tire poll during Week 5

• That marked the highest ranking in program history

• The previous week was the first time in program history the Hokies have broke the top 10 with a No. 9 ranking

• No. 16 is the highest ranking among Tech sports this week

BIRTHDAY GIRLS

• 12 Hokies have birthdays during the women’s soccer season

• Three of them fall on game day and they all turn 21:

- Shannon Mayrose (Sept. 2 at American - connected on a pk)

- Julia Goldsworthy (Sept. 16 vs. NC State - helped earn Tech’s sixth-consecutive shutout to make history)

- Emily Seigel (Sept. 20 at North Carolina)
