BLACKSBURG, Va. – A strong first half led the No. 22 Virginia Tech soccer team to a 2-0 victory over the Richmond Spiders in the final game of the Hilton Garden Inn Hokie Invitational Sunday afternoon. Senior Anne Lumpkin and freshman Helen Butler both connected on goals for the Hokies.

Tech completed the opening weekend with a 2-0-0 record, while the Spiders fell to 0-2-0 on the season.

The Hokies came out hot taking the first shot with a minute into play. Shannon Mayrose looked to find an opening but a Richmond defender was there to block the shot. Tech fired another shot two minutes later before Mayrose sent a cross ball into the box that Lumpkin sent to the back of the net to put the Hokies on the board early at the 4:21 mark.

Just two minutes later, Jordan Coburn took the first corner kick of the game. The freshman defender placed the ball perfectly in the box as Butler headed in the final goal of the day in the seventh minute. The Hokies closed the half with 11 shots, while the Spiders only took two.

Richmond was eager to put a point on the board in the second half, as the Spiders outshot the Hokies 4-3. But the Hokie defense remained strong to earn the shutout.

Tech closed the game with 14 shots and six corner kicks, while Richmond took six shots and just two corners. Mayrose led both teams with six shots, while Kelly Conheeney followed with five.

Freshman goalkeeper Caroline Kelly charted the win for the Hokies, as she recorded four saves to remain perfect. Richmond’s Andrea Young notched six saves as the senior goalkeeper took the loss.

The Hokies will be back in action this weekend when they travel to Lincoln, Neb., for the Husker Classic. Tech will face the host, Nebraska, Friday night at 6 p.m., before facing Iowa State on Sunday morning at 10:30 a.m.
