BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech women’s soccer team came up just short against the No. 17 Florida State Seminoles, falling 2-0 at Thompson Field Thursday evening. The Hokies honored the team’s four senior, Brittany Michels, Rachel Beaumont, Katie Cramp and Brittany Popko, prior to the game as they took to Thompson Field for the final time in their Tech career.

“Florida State is a great team,” commented first-year head coach Chugger Adair. “They were solid and I think we matched them for the most part. There were times where we made a couple mistakes here and there and they capitalized on a couple goals. I am happy with our ball possession and the way we played. We were a little bit off; it wasn’t on for us tonight as far as the mentality. We weren’t as sharp as we needed to be. To be honest, I think we were a little satisfied that we are in the ACC Tournament and it was apparent in our game.”

Florida State (12-6-0, 5-5-0 ACC) began the game attacking early as it fired two shots and earned a corner kick in the opening seven minutes of the match. Play would continue on to be back-and-forth from there. Tech (12-6-1, 4-5-1 ACC) first struck in the 21^st minute when Kelly Conheeney struck, but the ball soared high.

Though the Seminoles did not dominate the first half, they controlled possession for much of the period and it eventually paid off in the 34^th minute when Tiffany McCarty buried a shot into the bottom right side of the net, just beyond the reach of Tech’s keeper Dayle Colpitts. McCarty received a pass up the field from Tori Huster and she quickly took off down the middle of the field straight for the goal, releasing the shot just inside the 18-yard box.

Taking that lead into the halftime break, Florida State outshot the Hokies 7-1 in the opening period with McCarty taking three shots as the only player to strike more than once. Colpitts tallied three saves in the half.

The second half began in similar fashion, but the Seminoles were able to capitalize much earlier on as Huster made it 2-0 in the 55^th minute. Huster had an open look on net from about seven yards out after receiving a cross pass that was relayed down the field by McCarty and Jessica Price.

Tech upped its time of possession in the second half as play often remained in the middle of the field. Conheeney struck again for the Hokies, this time in the 63^rd minute but her shot was blocked from 12 yards out, forcing a corner kick. Kelsey Loupee served the ball in on the corner but the aggressive Florida State defense quickly cleared it out.

Balanced play dominated the closing minutes of the match as Amanda Gerhard’s shot in the 82^nd minute was the only attempt taken by either team in the closing 20 minutes of the game.

Florida State outshot the Hokies 9-3 in the match, though Tech held the Seminoles to just two shots in the second half.

Conheeney finished the match with two shots, while Colpitts played the complete game in net and tallied three saves on the evening.

McCarty led the way for the Seminoles with three shots and three points as she put away the go-ahead goal and assisted the second score. Huster was the only other player in the match to tally more than one shot as she fired twice and finished the day with three points as well. Kelsey Wys got the win for Florida State but was not forced to make a save in the match.

After wrapping up the regular season this evening, the Hokies await the completion of the other league games before they will know their first-round opponent in this year’s ACC Tournament. Check back at hokiesports.com for more details as they are released.
