BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech women’s soccer team closed out the Hilton Garden Invitational with a 3-0 victory over the Loyola Greyhounds Sunday afternoon on Thompson Field. Brittany Michels, Katie Cramp and Kelly Conheeney each connected on one goal each for the Hokies.

“It was a good day for us,” commented first-year head coach Chugger Adair. “I think we controlled much of this game by owning a 25-1 shot advantage. I thought the girls worked hard and did a great job. Loyola did a good job defending; they kept a few balls off the line early on, which made it difficult to score so getting the first goal was important and once we did the game opened up. I’d like to see us score a goal or to earlier but we got the win, which is important and it’s a good bounce back after the loss to Nebraska. We are looking forward to Appalachian State on Thursday.”

Tech (7-1-0) set the tone for the game early in the first half as it dominated the Greyhounds (1-7-0) offensively and kept control of possession the entire half. Brittany Michels was very active on corner kicks as the Hokies tallied seven in the half, but she was unable to get a hold of anything.

Later in the half Katie Yensen received the ball up the field and fired a shot at the goal, but Loyola’s keeper Didi Haracic came up with a big save. Tech nearly had another opportunity when Brittany Popko fired a header at the net but a Loyola defender was perfectly positioned at the post to deflect the ball away.

Towards the end of the half, Shannon Mayrose laid out as she dove at a ball in front of the goal and headed it in attempt to score but Haracic was there again for another big save.

Tech took the shooting edge in the first half 14-1, while it was a true team effort from the Greyhounds in the first half as they recorded three team saves.

The hard work finally paid off for Michels in front of the net as she was able to get a hold of a Kelsey Loupee corner kick and head it into the back of the net in the 49^th minute.

On a broken play that saw the ball get served into the box, Kelly Conheeney got a hold of the loose ball in the box and brought it out a few steps to get a better look at the net. Despite the readjustment, Haracic stopped the attempt.

Remaining persistent, Conheeney continued to attack through the second half and eventually put the Hokies up 2-0 in the 67^th minute. After Jazmine Reeves was taken down just inches outside the 18-yard box, Tech was awarded a free kick that was lifted over the Loyola wall and soared over the keeper’s hands into the back of the net.

Tech tacked on another goal at the 78:14 mark when Anne Lumpkin served in a long ball from the right sideline that Katie Cramp was able to get a head on as she rose above the crowd and redirected the ball into the top left side of the net.

Anna Romeiser got the start in goal for the Hokies, who played nearly every player that dressed, and played the full 90 minutes and stopping Loyola’s only shot. Haracic also lasted the full 90 minutes and made 12 of the team’s 15 saves.

Four Hokies were selected to the All-Tournament team, including Conheeney, Brittany Popko, Lumpkin and Ashley Manning. The full team is listed below.

The Hokies return to Thompson Field Thursday, Sept. 15 to take on Appalachian State for a 6 p.m. match up.
