WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – In a game that lasted about four hours due to weather delays, the Hokies extended their unbeaten streak to five in a 3-2 victory over Campbell at the Wake Forest Tournament Friday night. Kelly Conheeney tallied her second multi-goal game this season, while charting her 10th game winner of her career. Shannon Mayrose recorded the other goal for Tech making this her fourth consecutive game scoring a goal.
“This was a difficult night for us,” commented first-year head coach Chugger Adair. “Both teams had to deal with delays making it very challenging and Campbell had a great game plan. The result in the end was good and we are looking forward to the next game against Connecticut.”
The two teams traded corner kicks before Conheeney had a chance to put the first point on the board with a header that shot wide. Two minutes later, Campbell’s Pirjo Leppikangas broke away off a pass from Ashley Clark and found the back of the net from the right side to put the Camels on the board, 1-0, at the 20:50 mark.
The Hokies quickly responded when Jazmine Reeves sent a cross ball that deflected off a defender and Mayrose knocked it in the goal in the 24th minute. The two teams would go into the half tied 1-1.
Three minutes into the second period, freshman Kelsey Loupee took a corner kick for the Hokies that Mayrose dished to Conheeney, who found the back of the net from seven yards back to put Tech up one.
The Camels responded with a goal at the 53:29 mark, when Annabelle Gibney connected on a ball from Line Berntsen ten yards out tying the game at two. The Hokies took eight shots, before Conheeney recorded the game-winner with a diving header from Reeves.
The Tech defense continued to shine, holding Campbell to just eight shots, while the Hokies took 28. This is the third consecutive game that Tech’s opponents were held under 10 shots.
Redshirt-sophomore Anna Romeiser recorded the win for the Hokies and charted three saves. In goal for the Camels was Ryann Torrero, who denied eight shots, while allowing three goals.
Tech will return to Spry Stadium Sunday to take on Connecticut at 11:30 a.m.
