BLACKSBURG, Va. – Junior Kelly Conheeney led the Virginia Tech women’s soccer team to a, 5-0, victory over the Elon Phoenix Sunday evening at Thompson Field. Shannon Mayrose, Rachel Beaumont and Katie Cramp also connected on one goal each. The Hokies remain unbeaten as they improve to 4-0-0 on the season.

“I am definitely happy with the win,” commented first-year head coach Chugger Adair. “The girls came together and played well in the end. I thought we started out a bit slow, but one huge turning point for us was the saved penalty that Anna Romeiser made. It helped motivate our team and get us rolling a little bit better.”

The first half started a little slow. The two teams traded shots 10-minutes into the game, before Brittany Michels recorded a foul in the box to reward Elon (1-1-1) with a penalty kick in the 17^th minute. Jaclyn Wood took the penalty kick for the Phoenix before Hokie keeper, Anna Romeiser made the huge stop for Tech.

Tech came alive after the save, as it recorded two shots and a corner kick before Conheeney connected on a header from Mayrose in front of the goal at the 25:30 mark, to give the Hokies the lead, 1-0.

Eight minutes later, Mayrose found the back of the net on a deflected shot from Jazmine Reeves to record her third goal of the season and put Tech up two. Shortly after, Mayrose shot a ball that hit the side of the post and Conheeney sinked the deflected ball to make it, 3-0 going into the break.

Beaumont recorded her first career goal in the 70^th minute, as she head in a corner kick from freshman Kelsey Loupee. 10 minutes later, Loupee dished it to Cramp that shot from six-yards back to tally the last goal for the Hokies.

As a team, the Hokies took 25 shots and four corner kicks, while holding Elon to just three shots and one corner. Tech has held three of its four opponents to no more than four shots, while outscoring all of its opponents, 15-1, so far this season.

Romeiser recorded the shutout for Tech, while Elon’s Shannon Cosgrove took the loss. Taylor Dawson and Kate Murphy saw time in goal for the Phoenix, charting two saves each. Redshirt-freshman Kimberley Anderson recorded the last 10-minutes for the Hokies.

“We did a good job controlling the tempo of the game and getting a win,” Adair added. “We deserve the result and I just hope our starters continue to get better.”

Tech returns to action when it travels to Winston-Salem, N.C., for the Wake Forest Tournament on Friday, Sept. 2 to face Campbell at 4 p.m.
