No. 10 Hokies defeat Princeton in Grapple at the Garden, 26-12

BLACKSBURG - Four straight wins by the Virginia Tech upperweights propelled the No. 10 Hokies to a 26-12 victory over Princeton on Sunday night in the annual Grapple at the Garden in the Theater at Madison Square Garden.

Starting with freshman Hunter Bolen at 174 pounds and ending with redshirt freshman Andrew Dunn, the Hokies (4-1) jumped out to a 13-0 lead. Tech falls from redshirt senior Dennis Gustafson and redshirt sophomore David McFadden bolstered the Tech advantage.

Bolen got the night started with a 6-0 decision over Carlin Powell, paving the way for three consecutive wins for the Hokies in the upperweights. Redshirt junior Zack Zavatsky followed with an 11-2 major decision that put Tech out in front, 7-0.

After Princeton (0-2) picked up a decision at 125 pounds that cut Tech’s deficit to 10, 13-3, Gustafson got the Hokies back on track with his third tech fall of the season over Trey Aslanian at 5:08. Redshirt freshman Brent Moore’s 10-6 decision at 141 pounds clinched the match.

The Hokies return to Carilion Court at Cassell Coliseum on Dec. 22 when they take on West Virginia at 7 p.m.
