Three Hokies win titles at Franklin & Marshall Open
Gustafson, Norstrem excel in their returns to the mat for Tech
January 7, 2017
LANCASTER, Pa. - Sophomore David McFadden and redshirt juniors Dennis Gustafson and Kevin Norstrem claimed individual titles representing the Virginia Tech wrestling team at the Franklin & Marshall Open on Saturday.
Gustafson, who had been starting for the Hokies this season at 141 pounds before suffering an injury, won the 133-pound title wrestling in the weight class for the first time this season. Norstrem swept his bracket at 141 in his return to the mat while McFadden took home his second piece of hardware this season wrestling unattached at 165 pounds.
With the score tied at 5-5 after regulation and sudden victory overtime, Gustafson broke through in the first tie break period to top Virginia’s Micky Phillippi in the finals. Norstrem, who was an NCAA qualifier for the Hokies in 2015, pinned Lock Haven’s Ronnie Perry at 5:56 in the semis before taking a 3-1 decision over Nicholas Gil of Navy in the first place match.
Taking third at 125 for the Hokies was freshman Kyle Norstrem, who defeated Thomas Cox of NC State by decision in the consolation semis before picking up another decision over Brown’s Michael Russo, 5-0, in the third place bout. Cody Hughes also took third at 174 as he rebounded from a tough loss in the semis to win consecutive matches. Despite falling in the third round, redshirt junior Mattheos Lozier rattled off four-straight wins to go 5-1 against the field at 149 pounds.
The No. 6 Hokies take on North Carolina tomorrow in Chapel Hill for their ACC opener at 6:30 p.m. The dual will be streamed live on WatchESPN via ACC Digital Network Extra.
