Hokies tied for fourth after first round in Austin

AUSTIN, Texas – The Virginia Tech women’s golf team shot an opening round even-par 288 and is tied with Baylor for fourth place at the 2018 NCAA Austin Regional on Monday. The three-day event is being played at the par 72, 6,341-yard University of Texas Golf Club in Austin, Texas.

Amanda Hollandsworth paced Tech, the 14th seed in the 18-team field. The redshirt junior from Floyd, Virginia, posted a 2-under 70 and trails leader Maddie Szeryk of Texas A&M by two strokes.

Emily Mahar, a freshman from Brisbane, Australia and Allison Woodward, a redshirt junior from Unicoi, Tennessee each posted a 1-under 71 and are tied for 15^th place. Jessica Spicer, a sophomore from Bahama, North Carolina and Elizabeth Bose, a junior from Norfolk, Virginia are tied for 55^th at 76.

Host Texas holds the first round lead with a 7-under 281, three strokes ahead of top-seed Arkansas Michigan State is at 285, three strokes ahead of the Hokies and Bears. BYU and Florida are tied for sixth at 291, Auburn is eighth at 292, Florida is ninth at 295 and UTSA and Miami are tied for 10^th at 298. Oklahoma and East Carolina are tied for 12^th, Texas Tech and Houston are 14^th at 300, Houston Baptist is 16^th at 301, Georgetown is 17^th at 302 and Missouri State is 18^th at 319.

The Hokies are making their first ever NCAA appearance. The program is in its third year of existence.

The second round will be played on Tuesday morning. The Hokies will be grouped with Baylor and BYU and will begin at 9 a.m. from the first tee.
