Hokies earn first-ever NCAA Women's Golf regional bid

Tech 14th seed in the Austin Regional May 7-9

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech women’s golf team has earned an NCAA regional berth, as announced on Wednesday night. The Hokies, which earned an at-large berth, will be the 14^th seed in the Austin Regional.

This marks the first NCAA regional appearance in the program’s brief history. Under the direction of Carol Robertson, Tech is in just its third season of intercollegiate competition.

“It was a long day waiting to see if this young team got a chance,” Robertson said. “It was a goal of Russell (Abbott, assistant coach) and me to have the inaugural team get the glory. They laid the groundwork for this program in every facet and it’s only fitting for them to get the glory. I hope to be a coach for many years, but I know this will be the proudest moment.”

The Hokies will be the 14^th seed in the 18-team field at the Austin Regional. The tournament will be played May 7-9 at the University of Texas Golf Club in Austin, Texas. The top six teams and top three individuals not on an advancing team will advance to the 2018 NCAA Women’s Golf Championship, to be held May 18-23 at Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Oklahoma.

Tech will be joined in the Austin field by fellow Atlantic Coast Conference member Miami, the eighth seed at the site. Arkansas is the top seed in Austin and second overall national seed. Host Texas is the second seed, Michigan State is the third seed and Florida is the fourth seed in Texas.

The tournament will consist of 54 holes of stroke play, 18 holes each day with tee times beginning at 8 a.m. CT. Live scoring will be available on Hokiesports.com, via a link from Golfstat.com.
