Hokies tie for sixth at Augusta

The Virginia Tech women’s golf team posted a three-round total of 890 and finished in a tie for sixth place with Daytona State at the 3M Augusta Invitational on Sunday. The three-day event, hosted by Augusta University, was played at the par 72, 6,228-yard Forest Hills Golf Course in Augusta, Georgia.

Tech shot 293 in Friday’s first round and followed that with a 303 in Saturday’s second round. The second round was delayed at the start by rain and began 30 minutes late. Tech carded a 294 on Sunday.

Amanda Hollandsworth led the Hokies this weekend. The redshirt junior from Floyd, Virginia finished at 4-under 212 and tied for third place with Emily Goldenstein of Memphis and Linda Lundqvist of host Augusta, four strokes behind medalist Jillian Hollis of Georgia. Hollandsworth shot an even-par 72 on Sunday.

Elizabeth Bose, a junior from Norfolk, Virginia, tied for 15^th at 220 and Emily Mahar, a freshman from Brisbane, Australia tied for 36^th at 227. Sarah Spicer, a redshirt freshman from Bahama, North Carolina, is tied for 57^th at 233 and Jessica Spicer, a sophomore from Bahama, North Carolina, is tied for 62^nd at 234.

Georgia won the team title with an even-par 864, nine strokes ahead of defending champion Purdue and host Augusta. Central Arkansas was fourth at 879 and Memphis was fifth at 889, one stroke ahead of the Hokies and Falcons. Middle Tennessee State was eighth at 896, Mercer was ninth at 897 and East Tennessee State was 10^th at 909. Southern Mississippi was 11^th at 915, James Madison was 12^th at 921, Troy was 13^th at 923, Eastern Michigan was 14^th at 928 and Columbia finished 15^th at 935.

The Hokies return to action March 26-27, as they play in the Henssler Intercollegiate, hosted by Kennesaw State. The two-day event will be played at the Pinetree Country Club in Kennesaw, Georgia.
