Hokies sixth entering final round in Augusta

The Virginia Tech women’s golf team has a two-round total of 596 and is in sixth place entering the final round of the 3M Augusta Invitational. The three-day event, hosted by Augusta University, is being played at the par 72, 6,228-yard Forest Hills Golf Course in Augusta, Georgia.

Tech shot 293 in Friday’s first round and followed that with a 303 in Saturday’s second round. The second round was delayed at the start by rain and began 30 minutes late.

Amanda Hollandsworth continues her strong play this weekend. The redshirt junior from Floyd, Virginia has a 4-under 140 and is tied for second place with Fernanda Lira of Central Arkansas, one stroke behind Jillian Hollis of Georgia. Hollandsworth shot an even-par 72 Saturday to compliment her 66 from Friday.

Elizabeth Bose, a junior from Norfolk, Virginia, is in a tie for 10th at 144 and Emily Mahar, a freshman from Brisbane, Australia is tied for 54th at 155. Sarah Spicer, a redshirt freshman from Bahama, North Carolina, is tied for 62nd at 157 and Jessica Spicer, a sophomore from Bahama, North Carolina, is tied for 74th at 160. Bose’s 1-under 71 was the Hokies’ best score of the day.

Georgia continues to hold the team lead, with a 3-under 573, 11 strokes ahead of defending champion Purdue. Host Augusta is third at 586, Central Arkansas is fourth at 588 and Memphis is fifth at 592, four strokes ahead of the Hokies. Daytona State is seventh at 598, Mercer is eighth at 602, Middle Tennessee State is ninth at 604 and East Tennessee State is 10th at 606. Southern Mississippi is 11th at 614, James Madison and Eastern Michigan are tied for 12th at 614, Troy is 14th at 619 and Columbia is 15th at 625.

The final round will be played on Sunday, with a 9 a.m. shotgun start. Live scoring is available on Hokiesports.com, via a link from Golfstat.com
