Hokies open Season Three at Minnesota Invitational
Women's golf continues climb up collegiate ranks

The Virginia Tech women’s golf team opens for their third season of competition Sept. 11-12 at the Minnesota Invitational. The two-day event, hosted by the University of Minnesota, will be played at the par 72, 6,248-yard Prestwick Golf Club in Woodbury, Minnesota.
The Hokies, under the direction of head coach Carol Robertson, enter the season coming off of a summer of outstanding individual play for team members. Tech’s lineup will feature three juniors, one sophomore and a freshman for this tournament.
The field at the Minnesota Invitational features some of the top teams in the nation, including three schools that advanced to the NCAA Championship, highlighted by semifinalist Southern California. Tech is one of three ACC teams in the Minnesota Invitational, joining Louisville and Notre Dame.
Amanda Hollandsworth will play in the top spot for the Hokies at Minnesota. The redshirt junior from Floyd, Virginia, was second on the team in scoring average last season. She won the 2017 VSGA Stroke Play Championship in June.
Elizabeth Bose will play second for Tech. The junior from Norfolk, Virginia, lead the team in scoring average last season. She advanced to the Round of 32 at the 2017 U.S. Women’s Amateur in August. The All-State performer was also awarded the 2017 Skelton Award, the top academic honor for a student-athlete at Virginia Tech.
Anne Taylor Hough will play in the third spot for the Hokies. The junior from Spartanburg, South Carolina was fifth on the team in scoring last season. She advanced to match play at both the 2017 U.S. Women’s Amateur in August and the Carolinas Women’s Match Play Championship in July.
Emily Mahar will be making her collegiate debut for Tech in Minnesota. A freshman from Brisbane, Australia by way of Phoenix, Arizona, Mahar competed in the 2017 U.S. Women’s Amateur in August and advanced to match play at the U.S. Junior Girl’s Championship.
Rounding out the lineup for the Hokies is Jessica Spicer. The sophomore from Bahama, North Carolina, was fourth on the team in scoring average as a freshman. She won the 2017 North Carolina State Amateur and advanced to the semifinals of the Carolinas Women’s Match Play Championship in July.
The Minnesota Invitational will feature 36 holes of action on Monday and the final round will be played Tuesday morning. Live stats will be available on Hokiesports.com, via a link from Golfstat.com.
