Volleyball program adds Kayla Schanback to staff

Coach Wilson, Hokies welcome Schanback as volunteer assistant coach to Blacksburg

BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech head volleyball coach Jill Wilson announced the addition of Kayla Schanback to the staff on Wednesday as a volunteer assistant coach.

“I could not ask for a better team of coaches, staff and players to surround myself with to begin my journey as a coach,” Schanback said. “I’m extremely thankful for the opportunity to grow and fall in love with the game more at Virginia Tech.”

Schanback is set to graduate this weekend from Campbell University with a bachelor’s degree in business administration.

A native of Casselberry, Florida, Schanback was a four-year letterwinner for the Fighting Camels. She racked up 1,457 digs, 235 assists and 86 service aces in Buies Creek, North Carolina.

With her reaching the 1,000-dig plateau, she became the 11^th player in school history to accomplish the feat. She turned in the most-ever digs in a match by a Camel on Nov. 12, 2016, against Gardner Webb with 35, and finished third all time in career digs in program history.

The libero played in 446 sets in her storied career and earned All-Big South Conference honors twice, as well as Big South Defensive Player of the Week five times. Academically, she was a three-time Big South Conference Presidential Honor Roll selection.

Schanback guided the Camels to an overall record of 20-12 with a 10-6 conference mark this past fall. It was the program's first 20-win season since 1998.

Outside of playing, Schanback served on Campbell’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) as a representative from the volleyball team. She also interned this semester with spring practice for the Camels, assisting with player development and managing courts and equipment.

Schanback provided coaching sessions to Harnett Central High School and was a camp coach at Fuquay-Varina throughout her time in the Tar Heel State, too.

“Kayla is a great addition to our family and we welcome her into the coaching profession,” Wilson said. “As a student-athlete, Kayla was a proven competitor excelling on and off the court and now she is eager to develop on the coaching side. Her passion on the defensive side combined with her drive to help young women develop make her a great fit with our program.”

Tech’s fall schedule was released earlier in the week and the Hokies will start the season in Charlotte, North Carolina, for a three-match tournament. Ironically, Tech plays Campbell the following weekend in Blacksburg as Schanback will coach against her alma mater on Aug. 31 at Carilion Clinic Court at Cassell Coliseum.
