December 16, 2016
BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech Director of Athletics Whit Babcock announced Friday that volleyball head coach Chris Riley has submitted his resignation effective immediately. Riley expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to coach the Hokies for 11 seasons and indicated a desire to spend more time with his three children.
Babcock indicated a national search for Riley’s replacement will begin immediately.
“I want to thank Coach Riley and his staff for their dedication to Virginia Tech and our student-athletes,” Babcock said. “We appreciate their contributions to our volleyball program and wish them the very best.”
“At this time in my life, I really need to focus on my family and being there for my kids,” Riley said. “I was fortunate to coach the sport I love at Virginia Tech for 11 years. The rigors of the coaching calendar can be difficult for any parent, and I would never want to give Virginia Tech or our student-athletes less than my very best. I wish nothing but the best for the Hokies and our student-athletes going forward.”
Riley recently completed his 11th season as head coach of the Hokies. His career record at Virginia Tech was 195-151 overall. Virginia Tech made one NCAA tournament appearance under Riley in 2010.
