Hokies open road trip with 3-0 win over Boston College
Tech sweeps its fifth ACC opponent this season

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. -- Senior Amanda McKinzie had 15 kills and 14 digs while junior Cara Cunningham hit .429 with an ace and two blocks in the Virginia Tech volleyball team’s 3-0 win over Boston College in Chestnut Hill on Friday evening.
Sophomore Jaila Tolbert had a team-high four blocks for the Hokies (11-17, 6-11 ACC) as Tech outhit the Eagles (8-19, 3-14 ACC) .264-.228.
Tech fell behind quickly in the first game, 3-0, but went on a 6-0 run to give themselves a 6-0 lead. From there, the Hokies extended their lead on kills from McKzinie and freshman Carol Raffety that forced BC to call a timeout trailing 12-7.
The Eagles fought back to tie the score at 17-17 but Tech sideout on a kill from senior Lindsey Owens and Cunningham followed with a kill of her own that made it 19-17. BC wouldn’t get an closer as a kill from sophomore Kelly Esch gave a 1-0 lead in the match.
Esch’s timely points continued in the second game where, with the Hokies clinging onto an 18-17 lead, she tallied a kill that created separation at 19-17. Her sixth and final kill of the evening also clinched the second set and gave the Hokies a 2-0 lead en route to a convincing 3-0 road win.
The Hokies return to action on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Syracuse. The match will be streamed live on WatchESPN via the ACC Digital Network.
MATCH NOTES
- The Hokies have now won by sweep in five of their six ACC wins this season.
- Senior Amanda McKinzie now sits at 965 kills for her career, 35 shy of 1,000 with three matches to play.
- McKinzie has now registered double-doubles in the last three matches and the Hokies have gone 2-1 in that span.
- Tech has won three of its last four matches and is 3-2 since sophomore setter Rhegan Mitchell returned to the starting lineup.
- Cunningham now has 96 blocks this season after a solo rejection and two block assists against the Eagles.
