BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech volleyball team will wrap up its 2016 home slate this weekend with a 6:15 p.m. match on Friday against Duke and a match at 1 p.m. on Sunday against Wake Forest.
The first 100 students to attend Friday’s match against the Blue Devils will receive free tickets to that night’s men’s basketball home opener against Maine at 9 p.m. Sunday’s matchup against the Demon Deacons will be the final match at Cassell Coliseum for Virginia Tech seniors Katie Krueger, Amanda McKinzie and Lindsey Owens.
Friday’s match will be streamed on WatchESPN via ACC Network Extra.
The Hokies swept the season series with Clemson last week after a 3-1 victory that saw Owens set a season-high with 24 kills and a double-double from sophomore Rhegan Mitchell. Mitchell is back and healthy at setter for Tech after missing 16 matches with an eye injury. Mitchell made her first start since Sept. 3 in her home state at Georgia Tech and posted 50 assists and 11 digs in the win over the Tigers.
Owens will leave Blacksburg with her name in the top five of the Tech record book in kills and the top 10 in digs. She is one of only six players in program history to go over 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs in a career. McKinzie is inching closer to the same feat as she sits at 926 career kills and 1,097 career digs. Despite missing most of her senior year with an injury, Kreuger made significant contributions the last two years off the bench where she collected 41 total blocks in 26 matches in 2014 and hit at a .278 clip in 51 sets as a junior.
McKINZIE REACHES FOR 1,000 CAREER KILLS
•Senior Amanda McKinzie is quietly approaching 1,000 career kills as her career in Blacksburg comes to a close.
•With 10 matches remaining, McKinzie currently sits at 926 kills for her career.
•McKinzie became the 16th player in program history to eclipse 1,000 career digs in Tech’s 3-0 win over Wake Forest on Oct. 7.
RAFFETY DIGS RECORDS
•Freshman Carol Raffety continues to climb up the freshman digs list and now sits in sole possession of third with 396.
•The Novato, Calif., native passed former Tech great Lisa Pikalek two weeks ago and is on pace to break the record held by Amanda Cloyd who posted 478 digs in 2004.
•Raffety currently ranks fifth in the ACC with 4.30 digs per set
