BLACKSBURG – Senior Amanda McKinzie hit .273 with 12 kills and sophomore Rhegan Mitchell returned to post five assists after being sidelined for almost two months in the Virginia Tech volleyball team’s 3-0 loss (25-16, 25-19, 25-16) to NC State on Sunday afternoon on Carilion Court.

With eight matches remaining, McKinzie sits at 897 kills for her career. Mitchell, who started in 23 matches at setter in 2015 and started in Tech’s first six matches this season, had been sidelined with an injury and last played on Sept. 3 against Texas A&M. Sophomore Jaila Tolbert finished with a team-high .333 hitting percentage for the Hokies (8-15, 3-9 ACC).

After dropping the first set, the Hokies (8-15, 3-9 ACC) fought to even up the match in the second game. A block from junior Stacey Christy and true freshman Melody Caloyannides was followed by a solo block from McKinzie that cut Tech’s deficit to four, 18-14. The Hokies trailed by only five after a late kill from Tolbert but the Wolfpack (14-10, 7-5 ACC) pulled away with the second set win to go up 2-0.

Looking for an offensive spark, Mitchell returned late in the third set where she tallied all five of her assists and recorded two digs. The Hokies rattled off three-straight kills off of sets from Mitchell but it wasn’t enough as NC State took the final game to complete the sweep.

Tech will next travel to Georgia Tech and Clemson this weekend before returning to Cassell Coliseum on Friday, Nov. 11, for a 6:15 p.m. match against Duke.

MATCH NOTES

• McKinzie has posted double-digit kills in three-consecutive matches.
• McKinzie, who passed the 1,000 career dig mark earlier this season against Wake Forest, could become only the seventh player in program history with 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs in a career.
• Caloyannides made her third appearance in ACC play this season and picked up a kill and two blocks.
• With her return against the Wolfpack, Mitchell missed a total of 17 matches this season with her injury.
• At the time of Mitchell’s injury, she was averaging 10.75 assists per set, ranked third on the team with 15 blocks and the Hokies had a 4-2 overall record.
