GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia Tech senior volleyball players Cara Baarendse and Jennifer Wiker have been named to the 2012 All-ACC Academic Volleyball team as announced on Thursday by Commissioner John Swofford

This marks the fourth time that Baarendse has been named to the All-Academic team as a human development major. Wiker picks up her third All-Academic honor and has already graduated with her undergraduate degree in finance and is currently finishing up an MBA degree.

Miami’s senior setter Nrithya Sundararaman was tabbed the 2012 Atlantic Coast Conference Volleyball Scholar-Athlete of the Year as neurobiology major, and graduated a semester early with Magna Cum Laude honors and was named to the Capital One Academic All-American Second Team.

On the court, Sundararaman led the league in assists with 10.72 per set and finished her career third in program history with 2,358. She earned honorable mention AVCA All-America, All-ACC, and AVCA All-Region honors.

Eleven schools are represented on this year’s All-ACC Academic Team, led by Duke, Georgia Tech, Maryland, and Miami with four apiece. Clemson and North Carolina had three student-athletes recognized. Boston College, Florida State, NC State, Virginia Tech, and Wake Forest all had two players honored.

In addition to Sundararaman, All-ACC Academic team members who also earned All-ACC honors this past season include Clemson’s Sandra Adeleye, Duke’s Ali McCurdy and Christina Gray, Maryland’s Ashleigh Crutcher, Miami’s Alex Johnson and Taylor Hollins, NC State’s Megan Cyr, and Virginia Tech’s Baarendse. Boston College’s Katty Workman and North Carolina’s Paige Neuenfeldt were named to the ACC All-Freshmen Team.

Clemson’s Natalie Patzin, Duke’s Gray and Wake Forest’s Beck were named to the league’s academic honor team for the fourth time in their careers.

The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports. Candidates for the awards must have maintained a 3.0 grade point average for their career as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters.

To be eligible for consideration for the All-ACC Academic Team, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during her academic career.
