BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech volleyball team was unable to bounce back in conference play as it fell to the No. 23 Florida State Seminoles, 3-0 (16-25, 21-25, 11-25) on Saturday night at Cassell Coliseum. Though the Hokies were not themselves on offense, freshman Alyssa Gammel stepped up and earned the first double-digit kills match of her career as she tallied 10 on the night.

Florida State (9-4, 3-0 ACC) began the opening set with the momentum but the Hokies (8-6, 1-2 ACC) battled back early on to tie things at eight apiece. The Seminoles would not allow Tech to linger for long and they used a 7-0 run to again distance themselves. Never looking back, Florida State took the opener, 25-16. Though the two teams each tallied 12 kills in the set, the Seminoles held Tech to a .050 hitting percentage, while they hit at a .312 clip.

A start similar to the first set, Florida State again got out to an early lead but Tech came back to tie things at seven this time and refused to back down easily. Even play ensued as the Hokies got as close as one on two separate occasions, including after a big kill from junior Cara Baarendse to make it 22-21 Seminoles. Florida State followed the Tech rally with three straight points to closeout the second set, 25-21. There was another deadlock in kills, as both teams threw down 15.

Back-and-forth play began the third set as Tech took the first point on a powerful kill from senior Justine Record, but after two early ties, the Seminoles never let the Hokies back in it. Florida State rallied for an 8-1 run midway through the set and eventually closed out the day with a 25-11 victory.

Visnja Djurdjevic was the only Seminole to tally double-digit kills, throwing down 11 in the match, while Katie Mosher was the only player in the match to rack up double-digit digs with 12.

Florida State took the kills edge, 37-34, but the combination of attacking errors and blocks did the Hokies in. Tech made 27 errors in the match, compared to the Seminoles’ seven, and Florida State took the advantage at the net, 12-3.

Tech will hit the road for just the second time this season, and first in conference play, as it will look to bounce back against Boston College on Thursday, Sept. 29 at 7 p.m.
