Jordan Fish, a 5-foot-8 setter from North Branch, Mich., will join the Hokies after playing for the Michigan Elite, Third Degree and North Branch High School, where she was coached by her father, James Fish. The future business major made the PrepVolleyball.com Frosh 59 list, was one of the top 25 sophomores in the nation and was a First-Team All-State selection in the state of Michigan.

“Jordan Fish is a very exciting player to watch,” said Head Coach Chris Riley. “She’s a great setter who comes from a great family of setters out of Michigan. She’s somebody who I think the Virginia Tech family is really going to fall in love with. The way she plays the game, she’s exciting, she’s flashy, but she’s really consistent and she brings a great energy to the floor.”

LaTasha Samson-Akpan is a 6-foot middle blocker from Fairlawn, Ohio. A senior at Copley High School, she will join the Hokies after playing for the Cleveland CYC club team. This past fall, Samson-Akpan was selected to the Suburban League first team, Division I First Team District 3, and earned a Division I All-Ohio Honorable Mention. Additionally, she is a member of the Greater Akron Touchdown Club and her team was the Division I District runner-up. As a junior with Ohio Elite, her team finished second in the American Division at Nationals. The middle blocker hit .342 with 383 kills and 74 blocks in her final high school season.

“LaTasha is a very physical player. She’s athletic, she jumps great, and she’s somebody who we expect great things from in the future, but who is going to learn and adapt quickly to the speed of the collegiate game. She’s somebody who can play more than one position for us, and we are expecting some great things from her.”

Alyssa Gammel comes to Tech from Bakersfield, Calif., where she played for Bakersfield Club Jamba, under coach Tom Clarke, and for Centennial High School, coached by Brooke Roberts. The 5-foot-10 outside hitter was the All-CIF Rookie of the Year before being named All-Area Volleyball Player of the Year in 2009 by The Californian. Additionally she was named on the AVCA Under Armor All-America Watch List and made the PrepVolleyball.com Fab 50.

“Alyssa is a 5-foot-10 outside hitter from California who brings an all-around game, hits the ball extremely hard, is real aggressive, and has a great point-scoring mentality. She is someone who we are going to be looking to to play as a six-rotation player in the not too distant future.”
