Gunnarsson earns ACC Performer of the Week

ACC Release

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Lisa Gunnarsson of Virginia Tech’s track and field team has been named ACC Women’s Field Performer of the Week, as announced by the league office Tuesday afternoon.

The freshman broke the outdoor school record in the pole vault at the Texas Relays last weekend, vaulting a height of 4.60 meters (15 feet, 1 inch) to place second. The honor marks her second ACC Performer of the Week selection this year, as she earned the nod on Jan. 30 during the indoor season.

Gunnarsson’s mark reset the Mike A. Myers Stadium’s collegiate athlete record on the women’s side and tied the seventh-best jump in collegiate history. The mark also is No. 1 in the country.

Gunnarsson, a native of Stockholm, Sweden, broke the national junior record for Sweden, too. Tech’s record for the outdoor season was previously held by Martina Schultze set in 2013.

Earlier in the year, Gunnarsson set the indoor school record with a vault of 4.46 meters (14 feet, 7.5 inches) on the campus of Clemson. She later went on to win the gold medal at the ACC Indoor Championships.

Three others and a relay were selected by the ACC for the weekly awards, including Georgia Tech’s Avery Bartlett (Men Track) and its women’s 4x100-meter shuttle hurdle relay (Women Track), Florida State’s Austin Droogsma (Men Field) and Miami’s Kayla Johnson (Women Track). All of the times and marks are No. 1 in country, marking the first time in ACC history that all of the league’s Performers of the Week owned the top mark in his or her respective events.

The Hokies will hit the road this weekend to compete on High Point’s campus at the VertKlasse Meeting. The event is slated for Friday and Saturday at Vert Stadium.
