Marcel Lomnicky Advances at the Rio Olympic Games
Marcel Lomnicky placed 10th overall and will represent Slovakia in the hammer throw final

BLACKSBURG – Former Virginia Tech standout Marcel Lomnicky threw a best throw of 74.16 meters (243 feet, 4 inches) on Wednesday to advance to the hammer throw finals, while representing Team Slovakia at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Twelve athletes advanced to the final round of competition, as the Nitra, Slovakia native placed 10th overall and second in Group A with his throw of 74.16 meters (243 feet, 4 inches). Poland’s Wojciech Nowicki finished first overall (77.64 meters), followed by Belarus’ Ivan Tsikhan in second (76.51 meters) and Tajikistan’s Dilshod Nazarov in third (76.39 meters).

The final round is set for Friday, Aug. 19 at 8:05 p.m.

Lomnicky was a six-time All-American as well as a two-time NCAA Champion in the hammer throw event at Tech. He concluded his career in 2012.

Of note, Tech teammate Kristi Castlin will compete in the 100-meter hurdles semifinal round tonight at 7:45 p.m. A live stream will be available on NBCSports.com. Portions of the race also will be televised on NBC.
