Watkins earns ACC Track Performer of the Week honors

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Sprinter Darius Watkins began the outdoor season with two personal best marks at Miami’s Hurricane Invitational to top the ACC’s leaderboards and garner the ACC Track Performer of the Week honor, as announced by the Atlantic Coast Conference office on Tuesday.

Watkins placed among the nation’s top 20 in two events while competing at the Hurricane Invitational in Miami. The Grovetown, Georgia, native’s time of 20.96 in the 200 was the fastest among collegiate runners at the event, ranks sixth nationally, and is the sixth-fastest in program history. His time of 10.50 in the 100 meters currently ranks 19thnationally and is the eighth-fastest in school history.

The sophomore also competed in the 4x100-meter relay, placing second, and the 4x400-meter relay, placing fifth of 14.

Watkins’ honor is the first for Virginia Tech’s sprints group since 2012 when both Keith Ricks and Ciara Simms were named throughout the season. The Hokies were honored by the conference office four times during the 2016 indoor season.

Tech will take a week off before traveling to the Colonial Relays in Williamsburg, Virginia, the Florida Relays in Gainesville and the Texas Relays in Austin.
