Pollock advances to finals on second day of nationals
Kruzliak places fifth in hammer throw

EUGENE, Ore. – Junior Grant Pollock advanced to the finals in the 1500m as the Virginia Tech track & field team completed the second day at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships at Hayward Field on the Oregon campus Thursday night. Tomas Kruzliak become the fifth Hokie this week to earn All-America honors with a fifth-place finish in the hammer throw.

Pollock recorded Tech’s best finish thus far at nationals as he placed second in the 1500m with a time of 3:41.18 to advance to the finals on Saturday. This is the best nationals finish in Pollock’s career, and Saturday will be his first finals appearance.

Kruzliak notched a top-five finish for the second straight season in the hammer throw. Unable to defend his title, the sophomore still earned Second Team All-America honors with a 69.47m (227-11) throw.

Redshirt junior Jared Berman came up just short, but recorded a 16th-place finish in the 3000m Steeplechase, finishing in 8:53.72. Also wrapping up action at nationals were Shannon Morton and Sarah Rapp. Morton finished 20th in the 1500m with a time of 4:25.42, while Rapp came in 21st in the 10,000m with a time of 34:10.96.

The Hokies will be back in action tomorrow, Friday, June 13, as Martina Schultze will make her 2014 debut at nationals and Leoule Degfae will compete in the 5000m. Click here for complete results and a complete event schedule.
