EUGENE, Ore. – The Virginia Tech track & field team concluded its first day of competition at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships tonight at Hayward Field on the Oregon campus. Four Hokies earned All-America honors, led by sophomore Sabine Kopplin, who was Tech’s lone first-team honoree.

Kopplin was the only Hokie to finish top-eight on the opening day of competition as she finished seventh in the javelin with a 52.84m (173.4) throw. Freshman Eva Vivod earned an 11^th-place finish in her nationals debut with a mark of 49.06m (160.11) to earn Second Team All-America honors.

Torben Laidig and Stephan Munz finished 15^th and 16^th, respectively, in the men’s pole vault as both cleared 5.40 (17-8 ½) on their second attempt, but were unable to advance any further. The top-16 finishes earned both Laidig and Munz Second Team All-America honors.

In semifinal action, the competition at nationals came to an end for Hanna Green and Darrell Wesh. Green placed 13^th and was unable to qualify for Friday’s finals in the 800m, finishing in 2:05.45. Wesh competed in the 100m and earned an 11^th-place finish in the semifinals with a time of 10.21.

Tech will be back in action tomorrow with five Hokies competing. Tomas Kruzliak will start the day off for Tech as he looks to defend his national title in the hammer throw beginning at 4:30 eastern time. Distance runners Grant Pollock (1500m), Jared Berman (3000 steeplechase), Shannon Morton (1500m) and Sarah Rapp (10,000m) will also be competing on Day 2 of nationals.
