JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Three Hokies have already punched their tickets to the NCAA Championships after the first day of the NCAA East Regional held in Jacksonville, Fla. on Thursday evening.
Darrell Wesh, competing in only his second meet this season, finished in second place in the men’s 100-meter dash. Wesh hit a time of 10.31 seconds and was only behind Florida State’s Dentarius Locke, the reigning ACC Champion.
Grant Pollock finished in 9th place overall to qualify for the next round of the men’s 1500-meter race, which will take place on Saturday. Pollock earned his ninth place finish with a time of 3:46.29 in a field of 48 competitors. Pollock and 23 other competitors will compete again on Saturday to earn one of the 12 spots at the NCAA Championship.
Sarah Rapp punched her ticket to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore., after posting a 10th place finish in the 10,000-meter race. Rapp finished the race in a time of 34:04.33.
Sabine Kopplin finished second in the women’s javelin throw and Eva Vivod finished in 10th place, earning the pair a spot in the NCAA Championship in Eugene. Kopplin threw a mark of 174’2” (53.09m) and Vivod hit a mark of 164’0” (49.98m).
Shannon Morton was half a second short of the Virginia Tech school record in the women’s 1500-meter race en route to a seventh place finish overall and an automatic spot in Saturday’s race. Morton finished her race in a time of 4:18.19.
Both Hanna Green and Amanda Smith qualified for the next round of the women’s 800-meter race. Green finished in a time of 2:05.88 and Smith posted a time of 2:06.73.
Several more Hokies will continue their pursuit of a spot in the NCAA Championships tomorrow afternoon.
