CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Tomas Kruzliak won his second-straight ACC title in the men’s hammer throw to pace the Hokies on the first day of the 2014 ACC Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
For the men, Kruzliak’s throw of 214’4” (65.32m) marks the sixth-straight win for the Hokies in the men’s hammer throw dating back to 2009 when Marcel Lomnicky won the event. Kruzliak earned 10 points for the Hokies with his first-place finish.
Leoule Degfae finished in fifth-place in the men's 10,000-meter race with a time of 29:36.76, his personal best at the distance
A trio of Hokies qualified for the finals of the men’s 1500-meter race. Grant Pollock and Juan Campos posted a one-two finish in their heat of the men's 1500-meter qualifying for tomorrow's final. Pollock posted a time of 3:49.31 and Campos posted a time of 3:49.41. Vince Ciattei qualified for the finals of the men's 1500-meter race with a time of 3:49.79.
On the women’s side, Annjulie Vester, who has won the women’s hammer throw title for the past two seasons, just missed out on a three-peat after coming in second to Miami’s Lea Johnson. Vester earned her second-place finish with a throw of 192’2” (58.57m) scoring eight points for the Hokies.
Sarah Rapp ran a personal best in the women’s 10,000-meter race finishing in 5th place with a time of 33:32.16,
Christine London qualified for the finals of the women’s 400-meter hurdles with a time of 59.93 seconds, her personal best at the distance.
Shannon Morton qualified for the finals in the women's 1500-meter race after finishing second in her heat with a time of 4:25.76.
After day one, the Hokie women sit in third place with 12 total points and the men sit in fifth place with 14 total points.
The Hokies will continue tomorrow. Tomorrow’s events will feature Eva Vivod in the women’s javelin throw, Martina Schultze in the women’s pole vault and Amanda Smith in the women’s 800-meter race.
