BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Hokies crowned two first team All-Americans on day one at the NCAA Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, as Matthias Treff and Joe Davis earned their first career honors. Virginia Tech’s men’s team now has nine team points heading into Thursday, putting them in sixth place through three scored events.

Treff started the day in record-setting fashion, setting a new school and all-time ACC record of 255-6 (77.88m) in the javelin en route to becoming Tech’s first ever men’s javelin All-American, finishing second. Treff originally beat the ACC record with his second throw of 245-5 (74.80m), which qualified him to the final round seeded in fourth place, but he saved his best throw for his last attempt, launching himself into second place with a throw 12 feet further than the previous ACC record of 243-6 (74.22m), set by Virginia’s Brian Kollar in 2001.

Davis finished eighth in the pole vault, clearing a new outdoor PR of 17-2.5 (5.25m) on his first attempt to earn his first career All-America honor. The Hokies have now had at least one men’s pole vaulter earn All-America honors in six of the last seven seasons. Hunter Hall cleared the same height on his second attempt, giving him an 11th-place finish, good for second team All-America honors. Jared Jodon finished 17 overall, clearing 16-10.75 (5.15m).

The women’s 400-meter relay of Ebony Scott, Funmi Alabi, Zakiya Tyson and Ogechi Nwaneri ran a season-best 44.58, but finished 17th against a tough national field, preventing them from advancing to the finals. Their mark ranks third all-time at Tech. Keith Ricks also saw tough competition in the men’s 100-meter dash, finishing 18th overall, sixth in his heat, in 10.51.

Events in Des Moines, Iowa continue tomorrow for Tech beginning at 4 p.m. ET with Marcel Lomnicky, Alexander Ziegler and Denis Mahmic in the men’s hammer throw. Also competing are Jeff Artis-Gray in the long jump (6:35 p.m.), Michael Hammond in the 1,500 meters (7:15 p.m.) and Sammy Dow in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (8:30 p.m.).
