BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Virginia Tech wrapped up a fine weekend at the NCAA East Regional in Bloomington, Ind., adding six more qualifiers to bring the grand total to 21 NCAA Championship qualifiers. There are 14 men’s competitors in nine events and seven on the women’s side, including one relay, in four events. Thirteen of the 21 total qualifiers are in field events, 11 men and two women, including multiple competitors in the men’s hammer throw (3), pole vault (3) and triple jump (2).
The Hokies didn’t waste any time Saturday, qualifying right away in the women’s 400-meter relay. The team of Ebony Scott, Funmi Alabi, Zakiya Tyson and Ogechi Nwaneri just made the national cut, placing 12th overall with a time of 44.74. Michael Hammond met the mark one event later, moving forward with an impressive second-place finish in the men’s 1,500 meters (3:48.33) but unfortunately could not repeat the result later in the 5,000 meters, placing out of qualifying contention in 15:28.02. However, teammate Will Mulherin came through with a seventh-place finish in the event to earn his spot at the final meet with a time of 14:06.68. The women’s 1,600-meter relay closed out the day but could not qualify, as Aunye Boone, Yvonne Amegashie, Alabi and Natalie Woodford finished in 3:40.11.
