GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia Tech men’s track & field team was well represented on the 2010 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic men’s track & field team as announced today by Commissioner John D. Swofford.
Hasheem Halim (So., Lilburn, Ga.), Jonathan Hall (r-Jr., Fort Wayne, Ind.), Matej Muza (Sr., Zagreb, Croatia) and Alexander Ziegler (Fr., Dischingen, Germany) were all named to the academic squad. Muza was named to the team for the fourth time while Halim is a two-time honoree.
Halim, a architecture major, competed in both long jump and triple jump for the Hokies during the outdoor season. He qualified for the NCAA East Preliminary Round in the triple jump after finishing fifth in the event at the ACC Outdoor Championships. At the same competition, Halim was ninth in the long jump.
Hall, communications major, also qualified for the NCAA Preliminary Round following a third-place finish in the pole vault at the ACC Outdoor Championships. He also finished second in the event during the season at both the Aggie Classic and Liberty Twilight meets.
Muza, a geography major and the 2010 ACC Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year, last week was named to the 2010 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® Men’s Track & Cross Country Second Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America. He received an ACC postgraduate scholarship and the Thacker Award earlier this season. Muza threw a season-best mark of 65-06 in the weight throw at the VT Challenge during the indoor season and scored points for the Hokies with a sixth-place finish in the event at the ACC Indoor Championships. He finished second in the hammer throw with a toss of 215-06 at the ACC Outdoor Championships and was fourth at the NCAA East Preliminary Round. Muza concluded his Tech career with a 11th-place finish in the hammer throw at the NCAA National Finals in Eugene, Oregon.
Ziegler, a business major and the 2010 ACC Male Field Performer of the Year, earned his first outdoor All-America honor by posting a career-best 237-7.00 hammer throw to place second at the NCAA meet. His mark at the national meet bested his fourth place mark of 207-6.00 at the ACC championship in April by more than 30 feet. Additionally, Ziegler was the ACC hammer throw champion during the indoor season, posting a 73-10.25, and placed third with a 72-6.25 at the national meet in Fayetteville, Ark. He is the first field performer of the year from Virginia Tech.
To be eligible, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade-point-average in each of the last two semesters and have maintained a 3.00 GPA throughout her career. Student-athletes must have earned a 3.00 GPA during the spring semester and own the same cumulative mark to be eligible for selection to the All-ACC Academic team.
