BLACKSBURG, Va. – Seven Virginia Tech women’s track and field athletes earned Division I All-Academic honors, the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced on Monday.
Rising seniors Kristi Castlin and Asia Washington both received All-Academic honors, stamping an exclamation point on successful seasons. Washington garnered All-America recognition in the 400-meter hurdles at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Fayetteville, Ark., on June 13. Castlin notched All-America accolades in the 60-meter hurdles at the NCAA Indoor Championships on March 14 in College Station, Texas and in the 100-meter hurdles at the outdoor national meet.
Fellow All-American and outgoing senior Natalie Sherbak also earned All-Academic honors. Sherbak claimed All-American status in the mile run during the indoor season.
Pole vaulters Elise Birnbaum, Caitlin Thornley, Kelly Phillips and Abby Schaffer all received selections to the squad, to round out the All-Academic Hokies. Schaffer won the ACC indoor pole vault title in her freshman year, while Phillips tied for second at the indoor conference meet.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have met either the NCAA Division I Indoor automatic or provisional qualifying standard or the NCAA Division I Outdoor regional or national qualifying standard in their respective event.
