Fiala ties best men's finish at NCAA Championships with All-American performance
Owen also earns Honorable Mention All-American

ATLANTA, Ga. - The No. 24 Virginia Tech men’s swimming and diving teams completed day three with an All-American performance from Brandon Fiala and an Honorable Mention All-American swim from Robert Owen.

Fiala tied the highest finish by a male swimmer at Virginia Tech as he finished tied for fourth place in the 100 breast with a time of 52.14. It was the second straight day that Fiala earned All-American status as he finished eighth yesterday in the 200 IM. Gus Calado also finished fourth in the 200 fly at the 2006 NCAA Championships.

Robert Owen earned Honorable Mention All-American status for the third time in his career as he finished 14th overall in the 400 IM with a time of 3:43.10. He narrowly missed the final after swimming a 3:41.46 in the prelims, putting him just .04 seconds out of being an All-American.

“It was a strong day for the Hokies. Robert just missed the final in the prelims and gave a strong effort tonight. Brandon put forward one of the best races in program history and I am so please for him and his family as well as the H2Okies. We are set up for a great day tomorrow and excited for the challenge,” said head coach Ned Skinner.

Tech is in 20th place as a team with 28.5 points overall. Fiala’s swim earned 14.5 team points while Owen’s earned three points.

In the prelims, Norbert Szabo finished 29th overall as he swam a 46.80 in the 100 fly. Lucas Bureau put in the 34th fastest time in the 200 free at 1:36.01. For men’s diving in the 3-meter event, Ben Schiesl finished 32nd, Mauro Castro-Silva finished 34th and Eduardo Castro-Silva came in 36th.

In tomorrow’s events, Owen will compete in the 200 back, Lucas Bureau will swim the 100 free, Fiala will swim in the 200 breast and Szabo will take part in the 200 fly. In the platform event, Stevens, Schiesl and Eduardo Castro-Silva will compete.

The Hokies will return to the pool for the final day of competition at 10 a.m. with the preliminaries of the 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly, 400 free relay and the platform event. The finals of those events will begin at 6 p.m. and will be televised on ESPN3.
