Tech takes dual meet with West Virginia

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. - The Virginia Tech swimming and diving teams swept the dual meet at West Virginia University on Saturday afternoon.

The women got a decisive 178.5-118.5 decision against the Mountaineers while the men had a closer contest, ultimately winning by a score of 155-145.

The women dominated the the 200-yard backstroke with the trio of Fiona Donnelly, Auriane de Premilhat and Sydney Pesetti taking the top three spots. Donnelly won with a time of 2:02.04. The Hokies also took the top two spots in the 100 and 200-yard breast as Weronika Paluszek and Alyssa Bodin posted times of 2:17.96 and 2:22.31 in the 200. In the 100-yard, Mackenzie Stewart and Kelly Henry finished first and second with times of 1:05.76 and 1:07.17.

Pesetti also took home top honors in the 200-yard free with a time of 1:53.02. Jessica Hespeler won the 1,000-yard free with a time of 10:12.50. Klaudia Nazieblo won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 55.17 seconds.

On the men’s side, Michal Szuba won both the 500-yard and 1,000-yard free for the second time in as many days with times of 4:36.00 and 9:23.73, respectively. Christopher Wang touched first in the 200-yard fly with a winning time of 1:53.35.

Drake Becksted won the 50-yard free followed by Brandon Fiala with a time of 21.30 seconds. Robert Owen took first in the 200-yard backstroke with a 1:48.73.

The men took the top three spots in both the 1-meter dive and the 3-meter. Logan Stevens, Ben Schiesl and Mauro Castro-Silva placed in that order for the Hokies in the 3-meter.

Ashlynn Peters won the 1-meter and 3-meter for the second straight day with a score of 312.45 on the 1-meter and 319.00 on the 3-meter.

Tech will next hit the water at home for the first time this season on Oct. 30 at 5 p.m. as they host Queens University (N.C.) with the University of Richmond.
