H2Okies put more points on the board at day 2 at NCAA Championships
Owen earns honorable-mention all-America honors in 400 IM

IOWA CITY, Ia. - The Virginia Tech men’s swimming & diving team finished the second day of competition at the NCAA Championships with an honorable-mention all-America finish from Robert Owen in the 400 IM at the Campus Recreation & Wellness Center at the University of Iowa Friday.

Owen took 11th in the 400 IM morning prelim to qualify for the evening B-final event. After staying in the front half of the competition for the whole race, Owen surged up two spots over the final 100 yards to earn second place in a close finish in the B-final. He finished with a time of 3:42.67 for 10th place overall and his first honorable-mention all-America honor of his career.

Tech’s 200 medley relay team barely finished outside of scoring range, earning 17th place with a time of 1:25.98. Morgan Latimer, Brandon Fiala, Owen Burns and C.J. Fiala represented the H2Okies in the relay.

Latimer also raced in the 100 fly where he earned 34th after clocking in at 46.97. Burns swam a great 200 free race in the prelims, earning 24th with a time of 1:34.67. Brandon Fiala took 40th in the 100 breast with a 53.95.

In the 3-meter diving event, Shinholser was the top H2Okie finisher, taking 25th with a score of 360.80. Only two spots behind him, Mauro Castro-Silva took 27th with a 356.45 score. Logan Stevens finished 36th with 340.80, and Kyle Butts finished 42nd with 292.05.

The final day of action at the championships will begin at noon EST (11 a.m. local) on Saturday with the preliminary races for the following events: 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly, 400 free relay. Platform diving prelims will begin at 2:45 p.m. EST (1:45 local) and the early heats for the 1650 free will begin at 5:45 p.m. EST (4:45 local). The finals will start at 8 p.m. EST (7 p.m. local).
