Day One at NCAA Championships concludes for H2Okies
Tech earns honorable-mention all-America honors in relay

IOWA CITY, Ia. - The Virginia Tech men’s swimming & diving team completed the first day of competition at the NCAA Championships Thursday at the Campus Recreation & Wellness Center at the University of Iowa. Tech’s 400 medley relay team earned honorable-mention all-America honors to highlight the evening.

“Nice going for our 400 medley relay,” head coach Ned Skinner said. “It is a great way for Collin Higgins to end his storied career. We are happy to be on the board and tomorrow is a day in which we have some strong opportunities. We will be ready to compete.”

Tech’s 400 medley relay team put the H2Okies on the board with two team points after finishing eighth in the B-final for 16th place with a time of 3:08.50 for honorable-mention all-America honors. Collin Higgins, Brandon Fiala, Morgan Latimer and Owen Burns earned the honor for the H2Okies. It was Higgins last swim of his great career in which he earned five ACC top-10 finishes, one ACC bronze medal and one individual honorable-mention all-America finish after taking ninth in last year’s 200 back.

In the morning prelims, Tech’s 200 free relay team earned a 19th-place finish after clocking a time of 1:18.65.

In the individual events, Jake Ores finished 38th in the 500 free with a time of 4:20.95. Brandon Fiala finished 43rd in the 200 IM after hitting the wall in 1:46.02.

In the 1-meter diving events, Thomas Shinholser finished 22nd with a score of 330.40. Kyle Butts took 31st with a score of 320.70. Logan Stevens posted a mark of 283.80 for 43rd, and Mauro Castro-Silva took 48th with 229.35.

Each day’s swimming prelims will begin at noon EST ( 11 a.m. local), with diving prelims beginning at 2:45 p.m. EST (1:45 p.m. local). The finals will start at 8 p.m. EST (7 p.m. local)

Friday’s prelims will include the following events in this order: 200 medley relay, 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast and 100 back. The 3-meter diving will follow the morning swimming at 2:45 p.m. EST.
