GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Virginia Tech swimming team started the Men’s Atlantic Coast Conference Championships with a pair of medals on Wednesday evening, as the H₂Okies racked up 110 points on the opening night of competition at Greensboro Aquatic Center.

Tech started off the evening with a bronze medal in the 200 medley relay. Junior Morgan Latimer, senior Emmett Dignan, freshman Jan Switkowski and sophomore Joe Bonk combined to clock a 1:24.97 en route to the third place finish, setting a new Virginia Tech record and notching the H₂Okies’ first NCAA “A” cut of the evening.

Latimer’s lead off leg also set a new Tech record, as his 50 backstroke time of 21.22 set a new school mark.

In the evening’s other relay, Latimer, junior Owen Burns, sophomore Lucas Bureau and Switkowski also set a new school record in the 800 freestyle relay on their way to a silver medal, clocking a 6:19.69 to better their time from earlier this year by more than four seconds.

The pair of medals puts the H₂Okies in second place after two events, having tallied 110 points on the evening. Tech is just 18 points behind NC State, who leads after winning both of the day’s relays, and six points ahead of third-place Notre Dame.

Although all three diving events were completed last week, the points from those events will added at the end of their corresponding days during the Men’s Championships.

The 2014 ACC Championship continues Thursday with the 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard individual medley, and 50-yard freestyle preliminaries at 11 a.m. Finals in those events, along with the 200-yard freestyle relay, will begin at 7 p.m.

A live video stream of event finals will be available on theACC.com on Thursday through Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m., with Dean Linke handling play-by-play and Warren Perry adding analysis.

There is no charge for admission to the 2014 ACC Swimming & Diving Championships. Parking is available for $8 or for $15 for a session pass.
