Savage named All-American for second-straight year

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Senior Heather Savage of the Virginia Tech swimming and diving program was named an All-American for the second-straight year on the second day of the 2013 NCAA Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships Friday at the IU Natatorium. Savage touched the wall at the 52.14 mark, to place eighth and secure the honors in the 100 butterfly.

The two-time All-American started the day off with a seventh-place finish in the preliminaries to advance to the championship heat and secure her honors in her final 100 butterfly of her career.

Senior Logan Kline also scored for Tech as she earned All-American Honorable Mention honors in the 3-meter event. After scoring a 332.85 that was good for 11th place to advance, she brought in a score of 325.35 to finish 15th overall.

Sophomore Kaylea Arnett followed Kline with a 20th-place finish in the final springboard event as she tallied a score of 304.55. Sophomore Kelli Stockton brought in a score of 282.05 to finish 33rd.

Freshmen Weronika Paluszek and Alyssa Bodin swam in their first individual event on the national stage, both swimming the 100 breaststroke. Paluszek placed 30th with a time of 1:00.96, while Bodin followed in at 46th with a time of 1:02.80.

The 200 medley relay team started off the morning session for the H2Okies. The team of Sabrina Benson, Savage, Bodin and Katarina Filova swam a time of 1:38.93 to place 21st overall, which was the highest placing among the ACC schools.

Competition will pick back up for the H2Okies tomorrow starting with the prelims at 11 a.m., followed by the finals that will be aired on ESPN3.com at 7 p.m. Tech will compete in three events on Friday, including the 200 butterfly (Savage), 200 breaststroke (Paluszek and Alyssa Bodin) and all three divers will battle in the platform event.
