GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Virginia Tech swimming and diving program hit the podium three out of four events on the second day of the 2013 ACC Men's Swimming and Diving Championships Thursday evening at the Greensboro Aquatic Center. The H₂Okies shattered school records in the 200 freestyle relay and the 500 freestyle.

In the first event of the evening, the H₂Okies were on pace the entire race to win the bronze medal in the with an automatic NCAA qualifying time of 1:18.06, which also resets the Virginia Tech record books.

After setting a school record in the morning session, Michal Szuba, who was ranked eighth going into the finals, raced out to claim the bronze medal with a new personal-best 4:19.03.

In addition to Szuba's 16 points, Alex Lutterbein took 15th with a lifetime-best 4:26.06, while Jake Ores took 13th with a NCAA B time of 4:24.95. The 500 freestyle added 22 points for the H₂Okies.

Gregory Mahon claimed another bronze medal as he repeated his performance from last season in the 200 IM. The senior took a time of 1:45.66 to add 16 points to the Tech total.

The 200 IM was a big event today for Tech. The H₂Okies gathered 31 overall points as Owen Burns, Collin Higgins and Lucas Bureau all scored with personal bests and NCAA B standards. Burns took 10th with a time of 1:47.37, Higgins took 12th with a time of 1:48.14 and Bureau took 14th with a time of 1:48.45.

The night concluded with the 50 freestyle. Zach McGinnis placed eighth with a B cut time of 19.91, while Joe Bonk placed 12th also with a B cut time, 20.05.

Through the first seven events including the 1-meter springboard, leading the ACC after day one is the Virginia Cavaliers with 256 points and Tech follows with 217. Florida State is right on the H₂Okies' back with 205 and North Carolina is fourth with 192. Georgia Tech, Duke and Boston College all round out the bottom, respectively.

Competition will start back up tomorrow with the preliminaries starting at 11 a.m., followed by the finals at 7 p.m. The events tomorrow are the 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke and the 400 medley relay.
