RALEIGH, N.C. – The Virginia Tech swimming and diving program was stopped by the NC State Wolfpack in dual conference action Wednesday evening at the Willis R. Casey Aquatic Center. Coming off a very strong outing against Tennessee over the weekend, the No. 17 H₂Okie men’s team tied with the Wolfpack, 150-150. The Tech women fell to NC State, 140-160.

Ties are rare in the swimming and diving world, as the last time the H₂Okies resulted in a tie was in the 1968-69 season from the men, while the women have never tied in program history. This was the first time for NC State men’s squad to come up with a draw, but their women tied in the 1983-84 season.

“We ran into a strong NC State program today,” commented Virginia Tech Head Coach Ned Skinner. “They are very well coached and raced us hard. Our divers were fantastic today and are truly one of the best diving programs in the country. I can’t say enough about what Ron Piemonte means to Virginia Tech.”

The Tech diving squad brought in a total of 60 points today, as both teams swept the both diving portions. Kaylea Arnett led the way for the women as she was perfect on the 1- and 3-meter boards. The sophomore took a score of 316.65 in the 1-meter event and later recorded a score of 344.70 on the 3-meter.

Logan Shinholser remains perfect in 2013, as he took both events for the men. The current ACC Diver of the Week racked in a total of 418.85 on the 3-meter, for his top score of the season, and later took the 1-meter event with a score of 343.50. He is currently on a 10-event winning streak.

Including the diving events, the H₂Okies were victorious in 14 of the 32 events. The women took a total of six, while the men drew even with eight.

Michal Szuba remains undefeated in the 1000 freestyle, as the newcomer from Poland won the first event for Tech touching the wall at the 9:25.26 mark. Zach McGinnis collected the next event for the H₂Okies as Tech went 1-and-2 in the 200 backstroke. McGinnis took a time of 49.57, while Collin Higgins placed second coming in at the 49.97 mark.

Weronika Paluszek won the first event for the women, as the newly added freshman from Poland won the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:04.39. Keri Sink and Alyssa Bodin both followed in at second and third place, respectively.

Paluszek later took the 200 breaststroke to complete her event sweep. The freshman took a time of 2:16.99 and Kinsey and Sink followed behind taking second and third, respectively. Senior Heather Savage won the 100 butterfly and came in at the 54.03 mark for her second B cut time of the season. Sink won the final event for the women, as she took the 200 IM with a time of 2:07.53.

Szuba completed his distance freestyle sweep as well, as he won the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:32.22. Morgan Latimer and Jake Ores followed in second and third place to keep the H₂Okies in the competition.

Latimer won an event of his own with a time of 1:50.80 in the 200 butterfly, while Higgins took the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:48.18. Owen Burns was the final title for Tech as he touched the wall at the 1:52.25 mark in the 200 IM.

What was huge for NC State were the relay events. The Tech men lost their first 200 medley relay event of the season, as the Wolfpack touched the wall just .01 seconds before the H₂Okies.

“Our team continues to race hard and do a great job remaining positive,” noted Skinner. “We hope to build on this and have a great weekend swimming fast against William & Mary and Miami’s women.”

Tech will have a quick turn around as it returns to the Christiansburg Aquatic Center for the final dual meet of the season. The H₂Okies will host William & Mary and the Miami women Saturday at 11 a.m. and will honor their 18 seniors at the second intermission.
