H2Okies represent well at the 2012 Olympic Trials

Filova will compete for Slovakia at the London Games

OMAHA, Neb. – Twenty-two student-athletes from the Virginia Tech swimming program represented the H₂Okies at the 2012 USA Olympic Trials as they competed for a chance to compete in London at this year’s Olympic Games. Among the best swims for the H₂Okies were two top finishers: Nick Tremols and Heather Savage. Tremols placed 23rd in the men’s 100 butterfly, while Savage took 31st in the women’s 100 butterfly.

Seniors Matt Baumler and Emily Ferguson capped off their distinguished careers at the competition. Baumler posted a lifetime best in the 100 butterfly by breaking the 55-second barrier with a time of 54.96. Ferguson finished with a time of 26.98 in the 50 freestyle.

A few incoming freshmen also raced in Omaha. Joe Bonk, out of YOTA, competed in the 50 and 100 freestyles with times of 23.46 and 51.29, respectively. Local Virginia talents Kayla Iverson and Evan Nicely both represented Quest Swimming at the meet. Iverson finished with a time of 2:21.62 in the 200 butterfly, while Nicely posted times of 2:06.91 in the 200 IM and 4:27.99 in the 400 IM.

In addition to the Tech swimmers competing for the United States, returning H₂Okie Katarina Filova, who took off this past season to train for the Olympic Games, will be representing her native country Slovakia in London.
