CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s swimming team sits fourth on day two of the 2012 ACC Men’s Swimming Championships Thursday evening at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center. Gregory Mahon sets a school record in the 200 IM preliminaries, while taking home the bronze in the finals.

Heading into day three, North Carolina is in first place with a total of 245.5 points, while Virginia follows in second with 225. Florida State sits third with 214 points, followed by Virginia Tech with 164 points. NC State ranks fifth with a total of 127 points, while Clemson is just behind with 123.5. Rounding out the pack is Georgia Tech (108), Duke (85), Maryland (75), Boston College (42) and Miami (15).

After breaking the school record in the 200 IM prelims with a time of 1:45.06, Mahon brought in the most individual points of the night with a ‘B’ standard time of 1:46.18, good for third place overall. Nick Tremols followed behind Mahon in sixth with a ‘B’ standard time of 1:47.78.

Tech started off the night with the 200 freestyle relay, the quartet of Greg Morgan, Mahon, Emmett Dignan, and Zach McGinnis, placing eighth with a ‘B’ standard time of 1:19.39.

In the consolation heat of the 500 freestyle, Blake Trabuchi-Downey earned the first individual points for the Hokies as he placed 11^th overall with a ‘B’ standard time of 4:27.59. Alex Lutterbein followed Trabuchi-Downey with a 14^th place finish coming in with a time of 4:28.66.

Nathan Hoisington and Collin Higgins swam career bests in the 200 IM bonus heat with times of 1:49.97 and 1:51.59, respectively.

In the final event of the night, Dignan came in 14^th in the 50 freestyle with a ‘B’ standard time of 20.31 while Karl Botha finished with a time of 20.63 which placed him 22^nd.

Trabuchi-Downey started off the day winning the first heat of the 500 freestyle with a good enough time, 4:26.84, to advance him to the consolation heat in the finals for the Hokies. Lutterbein touched the wall at the 4:30.76 mark to join Trabuchi-Downey in the consolation heat.

Jake Ores just miss the consolation heat of the 500 freestyle as he recorded a time of 3:30.95 to put him in 17^th place.

In addition to Mahon’s score record and top qualifying time, Tremols placed seventh, touching the wall at the 1:47.56 to join Mahon in the championship heat. Hoisington swam a career-best 1:49.91 to qualify for the bonus heat, as he placed 22^nd.

Four H₂Okies qualified for the 50 freestyle finals, as Dignan swam a career-best 20.18 to place him in the consolation heat, while Morgan, McGinnis and Botha all advanced to the bonus heat. Morgan tied for 17^th with a time of 20.28, followed by McGinnis coming in at the 20.30 mark good for 20^th place and Botha touching the wall at the 20.36 mark to place 22^nd.

Competition will start back up tomorrow, Feb. 24, with the preliminaries of the 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 backstroke and 100 breaststroke beginning at 11 a.m, followed by finals beginning at 7 p.m.
