H2Okies kick off first day of the 2012 ACC Championships

CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech women’s swimming team kicked off day one of the 2012 ACC Swimming and Diving Championships Wednesday evening at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center with the 200 medley and 800 freestyle relay events.

The H2Okie women started the day off swimming a season best and ‘B’ standard time of 1:41.15 in the 200 medley relay event. The quartet of Sabrina Benson, Alyssa Bodin, Heather Savage and Emily Ferguson placed eighth out of the 11 teams, bringing in 26 overall points for Tech.

In the 800 freestyle relay, consisting of Erika Hajnal, Addie Carne, Katie Rogers and Rachel Sepanski touched the wall sixth with a season best and ‘B’ standard time of 7:19.97. The squad brought in 26 points for the H2Okies.

The University of Virginia swept the day taking both events, swimming pool record and ‘B’ standard times. North Carolina followed the Cavaliers taking two second-place finishes as well.

Tech is currently placed tied for sixth with Georgia Tech with 48 overall points, while Virginia (80) and North Carolina (68) sit first and second, respectively.

Competition will start back up tomorrow, Feb. 16, with the preliminaries beginning at 11 a.m. The diving competition begins at 1 p.m., followed by finals beginning at 7 p.m.
