Thirteen H2Okies earn All-ACC Academic honors
Tech men lead all schools with nine honorees

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Thirteen members of the Virginia Tech swimming and diving teams earned All-ACC Academic honors for the 2010-2011 season, as announced today by the Atlantic Coast Conference. An ACC-leading nine men and four women earned the honor, which totals the most H2Okies ever to earn this honor in a season, besting 12 two years ago.

To be eligible for All-ACC Academic Team consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his/her academic career. Miami’s Brittany Viola and North Carolina’s Tyler Harris, both four-time honorees, were named the ACC Women’s and Men’s Swimming & Diving Scholar-Athletes of the Year, respectively.

Cara Murnan, Lauren Ritter, Carissa Santora and Laura Simon represented the H2Okie women on the All-Academic list. Murnan, a junior political science major, is one of four three-time honorees, while Ritter, a senior in psychology, picked up her second career award. Santora and Simon, sophomores in English and biochemistry, respectively, both earn the honor for the first time.

Matt Baumler (Jr., Hospitality Tourism Management), Ryan Hawkins (Fr., Architecture), Gregory Mahon (So., University Studies), Zach McGinnis (So., Political Science), Logan Shinholser (So., Biology), Trey Stewart (Sr., Biochemstry), Blake Trabuchi-Downey (Jr., Biology), Nick Tremols (Fr., Communications) and John Trope (Fr., University Studies) all earned All-Academic honors for the men. It is the most men ever at Virginia Tech to earn the honor as well as the most for any school in the ACC this season.

Stewart and Trabuchi-Downey are joined by just three other three-time honorees on the list. Baumler, Mahon and Shinholser are all two-time honorees, and Mahon and Shinholser, Tech’s first All-American diver, were both on this season’s All-ACC team as well. The remaining four student-athletes, three freshmen and a sophomore transfer, all earn the honor for the first time.
