ATLANTA, Ga. – The Virginia Tech women’s swimming and diving team opened the ACC Championships tonight with the 200 medley and the 800 freestyle relays. After swimming two season-best NCAA “B” cut times, the H₂Okies sit in a tie with Miami for fourth place with 54 points. North Carolina is the current leader with 70 points, followed closely by Virginia with 68 and Florida State with 62.

Steffi Drechsel, Keri Sink, Heather Savage and Kaleigh Gomes started off the postseason, swimming the 200 medley relay in a season-best time of 1:41.93, good for an NCAA “B” cut. The relay squad earned 24 points for the H₂Okies, finishing seventh in the opening race. Carly Smith, Layne Brodie, Katie Nolan and Rebecca Kane earned the title for North Carolina, swimming a 1:37.89, a new Georgia Tech Aquatic Center record, followed by Maryland (1:38.57) in second and Miami (1:38.88) in third.

The H₂Okies wrapped up the first night of competition with a fourth-place finish in the 800 freestyle relay, swimming a season-best, NCAA “B” cut time of 7:13.32, shaving off five seconds from their earlier best time set at the Volunteer Invitational. Katarina Filova led off the race, followed by Addie Carne, Erika Hajnal and Lauren Ritter. Virginia’s Rachel Naurath, Liz Shaw, Kristen Moores and Lauren Perdue took home the gold, setting a new conference record in 7:03 flat, followed by North Carolina in second (7:06.32) and Florida State in third (7:12.76).

Day two of competition kicks off tomorrow morning with preliminaries beginning at 11 a.m. The women will swim the 500 free, 200 IM and 50 free prelims in the morning, and the final round will start at 7 p.m. The men’s and women’s diving competition will also begin tomorrow, with the women on the 1-meter springboard and the men on the 3-meter.
