CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Virginia Tech H₂Okies opened the 2010 ACC Championships with two NCAA “B” cuts in the 200 medley and 800 freestyle relays on Wednesday evening at the Koury Natatorium in Chapel Hill, N.C.

In the first event of the championship, Stephen Hawkins, Jonathan Huss, Gregory Mahon and Richard Ulatowski posted a competitive finish in the 200 medley relay, placing fourth with an NCAA “B” qualifying time of 1:27.67. The H₂Okies smothered their former season-best time of 1:30.96 and came within half a second of the school record. North Carolina took first in 1:26.63, a pool record, while Virginia and Florida State tied in second in 1:27.63.

Gregory Morgan, Chip Hughes, Blake Trabuchi-Downey and Bryan Uncur then coupled the H₂Okies’ first performance with another “B” cut in the 800 freestyle relay. The men finished in seventh with a season-best time of 6:35.35.

After day one and just two events, the men sit in fourth with 54 points. North Carolina, Virginia and Florida State hold the top three spots, respectively.
