KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – After completing its third day of competition at the Tennessee Invitational, both the men and women’s teams hold a tight grip on second place. The men have scored 471 points and the women have registered 602. The squads competed in the 100 back, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 fly, 400 IM and the 400-medley relay. Host Tennessee leads on both sides heading into the final day of competition.

The 25^th ranked women captured two wins this evening for the H2Okies. In the 200 free, Tech junior Kelly deMarrais placed first and touched in with a time of 1:48.66, while senior Sara Smith added to her impressive weekend, swam to the pace of 1:51.30 and claimed third place in the process.

Senior Megan Newell finished in first place in the 100 fly with a time of 53.96, to score an additional 20 points for the H2Okie squad. Smith, who posted 40 individual points on day two, scored her second third place showing of the day. The senior crossed the line in 54.97 for 17 points, bringing her total to 74 points at the invitational.

In the 400-medley relay both the men and women placed second. For the women, the team of deMarrais, Smith, Newell and sophomore Sarah Losinger finished the event with a time of 3:42.77 for 34 team points. Meanwhile, the men captured 34 points of their own and the team of, senior Ian deToll, junior Jonathan Huss, sophomore Stephen Hawkins and freshman Charlie Higgins touched in at 3:18.97.

The men posted two fourth and fifth finishes on the night in the 100 back and the 400 IM.

Freshman Charlie Higgins came in with a time of 49.28 in the 100 back with teammate and sophomore Zach Holmes finishing in a close fifth with a time of 49.54. Higgins missed out on third place by .03 seconds.

In the 400 IM senior Ben Miller scored a fourth place finish with a time of 3:57.82, while freshman Daniel Flynn captured fifth and touched in at 3:59.48.

For the divers, junior Mikey McDonald continues to impress. The junior captured his second win in as many days, this time in the 3-meter event. McDonald posted a score of 389.25. Sophomore Sarah Milton posted a second place finish in the 1-meter dive for the women. Milton put in her best performance of the season to score 278.05 in the event.

The teams will take the pool for the one last time in the final day at the Tennessee Invitational. The squads will compete in the 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly, 1650 free and the 400 free relay.
