No. 6 Wake Forest holds off No. 45 Tech, 4-3
Contini, Tessaro and Harper claim singles matches for Hokies

BLACKSBURG – The 45th-ranked Virginia Tech men’s tennis team battled 6th-ranked Wake Forest as four singles matches went to three sets, but the Demon Deacons were able to hold on for a 4-3 win on Friday afternoon at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.

Wake (23-4, 7-1 ACC) got out to the early lead over the Hokies (12-6, 4-4 ACC) with wins on courts two and three in doubles. Tech’s 7th-ranked pair of Andreas Bjerrehus and Joao Monteiro were up on 12th-ranked Skander Mansouri and Christian Seraphim 5-3 before the match was called.

The Demon Deacons went up 2-0 with a win on court two, but Amerigo Contini secured the win on three over Jon Ho 6-4, 6-1 as Tech cut it to 2-1. Wake Forest pushed its lead to 3-1 with Christian Seraphim using three sets to defeat Jai Corbett 1-6, 6-4, 6-1 in the No. 6.

Tech claimed the next match with Mitch Harper knocking off Dennis Uspensky at five. Harper picked up the first set 6-3 after trailing 2-0 early in the set. Uspensky came back to take the second with the same score. The Hokies player rallied in the third to win it 6-3.

At one, Tech’s 21st-ranked Monteiro battled with 16th-ranked Mansouri to three sets. Monteiro won the opening 6-3. In the second set, Monteiro trailed 5-3, but came back to tie it up at 5-5 before Mansouri held on to win the next two games 7-5 forcing the third. In the final set, Mansouri secured the win for the Demon Deacons 6-3.

The Hokies secured a final point for the team with 72nd-ranked Edoardo Tessaro winning over Romain Bogaerts on four. Tessaro won the opening set 7-5, but Bogaerts responded for a 6-3 win in the second. In the final Tessaro picked up a couple breaks to win the set 6-3 and the match.

Virginia Tech will be back on the court Sunday, April 3 at 51st-ranked Notre Dame. Match time is set for noon.
