No. 12 Hokies sweep VCU, 7-0
Tech rolls past Rams, winning all six singles in straight sets

RICHMOND, Va. – The 12th-ranked Virginia Tech men’s tennis team stepped outside of ACC play to down VCU 7-0 on Friday afternoon at the Thalhimer Tennis Center in Richmond, Va.

Tech (16-3) got off to a strong start, picking up the doubles point early with wins on courts two and three. Amerigo Contini and Jai Corbett paired up in the No. 3 to defeat Antonio Rodriguez and Michal Voscek 8-2.

The Hokies clinched the point with Joao Monteiro and Edoardo Tessaro’s 8-4 decision over Catalin Fifea and Wilder Pimentel in the No. 2.

Virginia Tech took a 2-0 lead in the match as 32nd-ranked Andreas Bjerrehus defeated Daryl Monfils 6-4, 6-1 on court two. Tech’s No. 113 Monteiro increased the lead for the Hokies with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Fifea in the No. 3.

Tessaro claimed a 6-2, 6-3 win over Rodriguez on court five to give the Hokies a 4-0 lead, clinching the team win. Tech continued to tally points as No. 119 Hunter Koontz downed Pimentel 6-0, 7-5 in the No. 4.

Corbett gave Tech a 6-0 lead defeating Louis Ishizaka 6-3, 7-5 on six. The Hokies’ 69th-ranked Contini completed the sweep with a 7-6(4), 6-3 win against Voscek on court one.

Virginia Tech will host Georgia Tech on Sunday, April 12 at 2 p.m. The match marks senior day for the Hokies and they will recognize Koontz and Florian Nicoud prior to the match.
